Description

Digipak CD of the self titled album by The High Kings, an exciting Irish ballad group of four top class performers who create this unique ensemble, re-energising the great Irish ballads and introducing exciting new songs. The creators of the smash hit Celtic Woman present the band: Finbarr Clancy (son of Bobby Clancy of the Clancy Brothers) , Brian Dunphy (son of Sean Dunphy, a major star of the Irish showband era in the 1960s. Brian toured as one of the Three Irish Tenors) , Martin Furey (son of the renowned Irish piper/singer, Finbar Furey) and Darren Holden( he toured with Riverdance and he played the lead role in the Billy Joel musical ''Movin'' Out''). For centuries, Ireland was ruled by High Kings. As their reign came to an end, their deeds and stories merged into the world of legend and myth yet the tales live on in music and song.

A good look at the talents emerging. The vocals are featured but the musicianship is well done also. My personal favorites: Will Ye Go Lassie: ''purple heather'' highlights their vocal talent with a soulful presentation of the tin whistle. Black Velvet Band: harmonies dominate an interesting tempo (sea shanty?) more authentic for someone contemplating the prison colony after a dark woman''s betrayal...yet it comes alive at the end, there must be at least one good memory. Rocky Road to Dublin: the heritage shines through here. Marie''s Wedding: ''mairi'' is an absolute gem with amazing harmonies between the voices and fiddle. The Auld Triangle: ringing voices, appropriate. The Parting Glass: I''ve heard many people try to do this Scottish chestnut. Some good, some bad. This rendition with the pipe band finale is (in my opinion) the finest version I have ever heard. It alone is worth the cost of this CD. What comes next, are they going to render obsolete every known version of Auld Lang Syne?

Like many others I was deeply saddened to hear of Liam Clancy''s death on December 3, 2009. But then I discovered that one of the members of the High Kings, Finbarr Clancy, was Liam''s nephew and had played on stage with his father Bobbby and his uncles many times. Indeed most if not all the rest of this Irish quartette had at one time or another played alongside the Clancies on stage. So I was delighted to discover their self-titled debut album right here on Amazon. I purchased it after hearing some of the videos from their DVD.
The High Kings combine traditional Irish tunes with their own unique style as well as some songs of their own creation. Every song on this album is great, although I do tend to skip Galway to Graceland somewhat more often than not. But the harmonies achieved by these four men are enough to send chills down my spine. Standout tracks for me are Black Velvet Band (although they shortened it by a few verses here), Marie''s Wedding, Fields of Glory, The Little Beggarman, Ar Eireann ni Neosainn Ce Hi (a beautiful Gaelic tune sung first in Gaelic and then in English)), The Auld Triangle, The Wild Rover and The Parting Glass. This last is done in the same triumphantly beautiful style as the Shaun Davey version used during the end credits of Waking Ned Devine. Personally though I think they should have closed the album out with this track, but this is a minor complaint. It''s followed by a live version of one of my favorite Scots Irish tunes, The Wild Rover. So all in all this is an excellent album and I look forward to anything else the Kings send our way.

I love the variety of this album, from the bittersweet softness of "Will Ye Go Lassie, Go?", to the upbeat energetic rhythm of "The Rocky Road to Dublin." I could do without "Galway to Graceland" (which is about Elvis for some reason, he didn''t do Irish music, did he?), but the rest of the album is so much fun!

But this is bright and fun and deep and moving and loud and tough. I love it! I took a chance buying this, I couldn''t download any of the song files. But I am SOOO glad I got it!!! I listen to it everday and I never get bored with it, and that''s saying a lot for someone with so short an attention span. It''s full of flavor and feeling and none of it is boring or grey. Honestly, I listen to this and The Rogues in the gym (5am!)and I have all the energy I need, even after being up with my 3 punkins all night! PLEASE make more SOON!!! we are HUNGRY for MORE!!

Most enjoyable combination of harmony, full voices and excellent song selection. This features two of my very favorites- Will You Go, Lassie, Go and The Parting Glass as well as a couple of rousing pub songs. This is a real favorite of mine and I recommend it .

It just so happened, as I was listening to some good ol'' Liam Clancy around St. Paddy''s Day, that the High Kings appeared on the Today show, and I loved their sound. Their voices meld beautifully together, and it''s good ol'' Irish tunes they''re singing--along with one or two contemporary, such as "Galway to Graceland," which is poignantly rendered. These are vocalists who understand the power of the human voice as instrument. Just listen to a few of the samples and you''ll hear what I mean. Then buy the CD. A warning about putting these tunes on your iPod--you may find yourself dancing....

I bought this CD without hearing one song or knowing anything more about it than it came from producer David Downes who has done magnificent things with his Celtic Woman. I figured that if it was half as entertaining as Celtic Woman I would have spent my money wisely; I love it when I am right.

These four men have beautiful voices and they blend together seamlessly and perfectly. From the first song, Paddy''s Green Shamrock Shore, I was completely and happily won over. I recognized that song from the show, Riverdance, which I saw this last summer and it immediately had me smiling.

The comparison between The High Kings and Celtic Woman is inevitable. The differences, besides the obvious ones brought on by gender, are huge, but the results are the same, I think; great music. Is one better than the other? No, I think I will enjoy them with same amount of enthusiasm and admiration.

Where the Celtic WomEn''s voices are accompanied by more musical instruments and choral groups, The High Kings arrangements, to me, are simpler. The main focal point is always on their voices and the musical accompaniment is kept uncomplicated and occasionally there is no music at all, except their voices.

The CD is an interesting combination of classic traditional Irish songs, and some new classics. Each song lends its own feel and leaves its own impression on this CD and its listener, the combination of songs is the perfect introduction to these four men.

My favorites:

The Black Velvet Band - is a traditional Irish tune that has long been a favorite of mine in any incarnation. I have been singing this song for the past two days, I love their version and their voices go fabulously along with mine in the car. ;)

The Rocky Road to Dublin - is a fast paced song that makes it absolutely impossible not to tap your feet or hands along with the beat.

The Wild Rover - This is a live version, The High Kings singing, a fiddler doing his best and the entire audience clapping along. My son and I listen to this over and over in the car clapping and singing along; he categorizes this as "cool Leprechaun music."

I really do love this CD and know it will be playing in the background while my family eats the St. Patrick''s Day feast I prepare this year. While all the songs are wonderful and inspire a different mood in me, I admit it''s the songs with a lot of fiddle and energy that speak to my inner fairy and makes her dance and smile. Enjoy!

And for Finnbar, Martin, Brian and Darren: Ceapaim go bhfuilim i ngrá! ;)

You probaly guess that I don''t live in Ireland and the business is not there either, when they hear some of this album from The High Kings they say where can we get a copy. Problem is that I usually end up giving them a copy as a present. I reckon that you are begining to get the message by now. This album is brilliant. If you never bought another Irish Traditional again think about buying this. You will not be disappointed and on that note excuse the pun I will rap it there for now.
