Like the classic Dido releases of the late ''90s and early 2000s--"No Angel" and "Life For Rent"--"Still On My Mind" is a collaboration between Dido and her brother, electronica wizard Rollo Armstrong. As was true on those early efforts, Rollo''s production is used here to excellent effect. Electronica flourishes enhance, but never overwhelm, Dido''s distinctive voice, gentle guitar, and literate, deeply personal lyrics. I fell in love with Dido''s music in 2005, hearing "White Flag" on a hospital radio while I sat at my late wife''s bedside as she lay comatose. The yearning in Dido''s voice resonated powerfully with me then, and has continued to do so through the years since. Although I enjoy all her albums, the twelve songs on "Still On My Mind" seem profound and necessary in a way that has not been true since the very beginning of her career. She seems more at peace now, writing about family rather than about the aftermath of failed relationships, but as always, she cuts to the heart of the matter, giving us an offering that is at once poignant and comforting. After repeated listens today, on the day of the album''s release, I can sense that "Still On My Mind" is rapidly becoming a favorite; it is a gift, and already an essential part of my world.

Dido''s first album was released in the U.S. in the summer of 1999, and I was 26 at the time. I didn''t hear about her until 2001. That''s when "Thank You" seemed to gain traction from "No Angel". That album was okay, and it was then that I realized I had already heard her without knowing I''d heard her. Yep, in 1996 I bought her brother, Rollo''s band''s, Faithless'' debut album "Reverence" for the song "Insomnia". That album was okay, and then I all but forgot about Dido by the time "Thank You" rolled around. After that, I continued to follow Dido with "Life For Rent", "Safe Trip Home" and "Girl Who Got Away".

Generally, Dido makes decent albums. It''s arguable whether she''s actually made four star albums as each one of her five albums contains some filler and/or devolves into a sort of formless mush due to her overreliance on similar tempos and soundscapes and singing style. In a way, like Enya, each album is not all that different from her others.

So, here we have "Still On My Mind", her first album in six years, and the longest gap between albums. What do we get? Well, more of the same, really, but she''s good at this. Lyrically, she can be a bit on the dull side, generally speaking, but she manages to create some interesting things here like "Hurricanes" with its swirling center. "Give You Up" with its "I am over you" message delivered in surrounding lush music. The rather odd "Hell After This" sounds a bit wooden and stilted. "You Don''t Need a God" only what you have in front of you. "Take You Home" is upbeat but repetitive. "Some Kind of Love" is an interesting story about growing up. "Still On My Mind" was kind of a weak track here, and it didn''t really stick with me after multiple listens. "Mad Love" is an interesting reggae groove, which is different for Dido. "Walking By", "Friends" and "Chances" are all pretty good. Finally, "Have to Stay" a letter to her son is a good way to end the album.

So, overall, another good album by Dido. I sort of wish, like Enya, she would take more artistic chances with her music rather than stay in her comfort zone. But, she has hit upon a formula that works for her, so I doubt we''ll ever hear anything different.

Here''s how "Still On My Mind" compares to Dido''s other works:

1999 No Angel: Three Stars
2003 Life For Rent: Four Stars
2008 Safe Trip Home: Three and a Half Stars
2013 Girl Who Got Away: Four Stars
2019 Still On My Mind: Four Stars

Dido just keeps getting better with age. From her upbeat, hopeful, youthful early albums, through her darker works, to this latest release, I''ve enjoyed and never tire of listening to her voice. Her trademark pop/electronic sound continues in Still On My Mind, and I could listen to just the accompaniment sans lyrics, as I could any of her past works. In fact, I have yet to really dig into the lyrics, as I''ve only taken my first pass through the album to confirm it is one that I can listen to as easily as any of her other albums, Safe Trip Home excepted. I look forward to a quiet evening at home when I can fully explore the lyrics in conjunction with the accompaniment, and I don''t expect to be disappointed. I only wish Dido would engage in more frequent new music releases; I never get tired of her sound.

First off, this is a great album. Can''t deny that. If you like Dido''s music, go for it. Just don''t expect great vinyl. First copy had a pressing artifact leading to static on the left channel on the first two tracks of Side B that remained after three cycles through a vacuum cleaning machine. Other than that, the vinyl was almost flawless. The pressing was so clean I toyed with keeping it, but alas, decided to roll the dice.

Wish I kept it, because my second copy is even worse. Same pressing defect on side B, going on three songs now- and I clean my records as soon as I get them, don''t put them in an after-marked sleeve until after I''ve played them. Something odd happening here, and I guess it is time to bite the bullet and pick this one up on CD instead of vinyl.

It is a good album to relax to (not for driving though) but is too easy listening compared to previous works! I also don''t like that she didn''t thank her fans for purchasing this CD in her insert (or even for supporting her)! A little inconsiderate if you ask me (perhaps a bit stuck up), however I wish she had released a few bonus songs too, as well as put a little more effort into the cd before being released!! That being said, if any music is released later on I''ll just purchase a few if any songs through amazon downloads and save at least half my money on the full purchase price of later CD''s if she even releases any more which at this point might not happen!!!

I really enjoy this album by Dido, who I got into several years ago. For me, it''s Dido''s voice that really captures my attention and is the reason why I listen to her. She (along with her brother Rollo) is a great songwriter and I find her voice relaxing. "Still On My Mind" is no exception. The album opens with "Hurricanes," a beautiful piece that''s slow and easy, which is as best as I can describe it and, again, that relaxing voice of hers really stands out for me every time. I especially like it towards the end, when the music takes over and starts to build, then Dido chimes in and it gets bigger until it stops and she ends with "Let me face....the sound and fury. Let me face.....hurricanes." I absolutely love it and is probably my favorite song on this album. "Take You Home" is another favorite, similar to "Take My Hand" from "No Angel." I enjoy the driving beat of it and it''s one of those songs that, along with Dido''s voice, makes for a great song to listen to in your car as you''re driving, especially at night. "Some Kind of Love" is a relaxing song where Dido''s voice really stands out. It''s about a woman who used to sing songs of love, but has lost her love and hopes that returning to these songs will bring her "the promise of some kind of love." I also enjoy the title track "Still On My Mind," where Dido is talking about a friend/love whom she let down, yet this friend is still there for her when she needed them, and is "still on my mind." I don''t think this album is as good as "Life for Rent," which is my favorite album of hers, as I like practically every track, but it''s better than "No Angel," which is a good album, but it''s a sad album. I find "Still On My Mind" more uplifting. I noticed that Dido recently re - released this album with some extra tracks. It was tempting to re - purchase this album, but I realized I didn''t need to do this, as I can listen to those extra tracks on YouTube. If you like Dido and want to hear more of that soothing voice of hers, then get this album.

Released almost six years to the day since her previous record ("Girl Who Got Away"), Dido’s long-awaited 5th studio album (and first with new label BMG) is a very welcome return. In an interview with Music Week magazine ahead of the album’s release, Dido claimed that “no one’s waiting for this record, no one’s expecting it." While the singer was referring specifically to not having a record deal (or any of the inherent pressures) whilst writing and recording "Still on My Mind," it certainly isn’t true that no-one was waiting – as fans around the world will surely agree. "Still on My Mind" happily reveals that Dido’s characteristic voice remains as it ever was (pure, plaintive, powerful), and her knack for gentle melodic reflection on life’s intricacies has not abandoned her. If you’re a Dido fan, there’s no doubt that you will want to add this album to your collection. There are many winning new songs here, and the highlights include the standout “Some Kind of Love,” title track “Still on My Mind” (which could easily have been taken from second album "Life for Rent"), immediate earworm “Take You Home,” “Hurricanes,” “Chances” and the touching, celtic-inspired “Have to Stay” (Dido’s song about parenthood which reportedly set this record’s creative wheels in motion). Produced almost exclusively by Dido and her brother Rollo (of Faithless), this is very much a synth, electronic record, more similar to its immediate predecessor and many (audio) miles away from sorely-underrated third album "Safe Trip Home" (on which every single sound was made by a live voice/instrument). Just occasionally, the production threatens to distract (the last 15 seconds of third track "Hell After This" demonstrate how the song might have been improved with fewer embellishments), but – conversely - lead-single "Give You Up" feels as though it could have benefitted from an extra gear in the final chorus. Also, on a couple of occasions (notably "Still on My Mind" and "Have to Stay") songs feel as though they have ended prematurely and could have used an extra 30 seconds or so. Minor quibbles aside, however, "Still on My Mind" is a consistently enjoyable record which travels through a deceptively wide variety of styles, all held reassuringly together by Dido’s much-missed vocals. And I’ve no doubt that many of these songs will still be on my mind (ha ha) by the time of the singer’s next record. But who knows when that will be?
